Here & Album

2012-2015

Here (2012-2014) and Album (2014-2015) focus on the explorations of migration and transitional experiences as well as the causes behind it through different generations. The project is developed based on my family stories, which consist of my parents’ and grandparents’ lives in transitions from 1950s communist China to the Chinese Cultural Revolution and then settling in the British colony of Hong Kong in the late 1970s’.

Here is a journey that began from our current home and extended in reverse to the places where my parents and grandparents are born, used to live, and have tremendous memories attached at different times in their lives.

From the beginning, the camera is used as one of the tools for communicating with my parents and our immediate surroundings. I realized that “home” has been a place that was both familiar and foreign to me. I do not have an adequate cognition of the past which my parents held before settling in this city, Hong Kong, as well as the cause of choosing "here" to set up our home. What I did know was that the story begins not just with my parents, but with the generation before them. I step into their past experiences and reminisce the lingering traces of their hometowns and memorable locations, whilst reading through the unfamiliar past through numerous family photo albums preserved by my parents and grandparents.

Album contains cropped and close-ups images from my family albums dated from 1950 to 2014 that provide hints of historical content and memories recalled by my parents. Through the recalls of family history from time to time during the project, I realized the retelling of memories and recollection is usually partial and selective. At the same time, memories may fade with time, some parts get lost and some are preserved. I attempt to resemble the fragmented and disintegrated characteristic of memories, like the process of recollecting and piecing together fuzzy memories in the mind through the reconstruction of my family albums. Moreover, the juxtaposing of images from different timelines and perspectives unfolds a divergent narrative of the family story which spans three generations.
