2³ or Not 2³: East Kowloon is on Minecraft is a virtual art exhibition in the game world of Minecraft. In light of the East Kowloon Cultural Centre’s opening in 2023, the exhibition reinterprets the cultural and historical elements of East Kowloon, featuring two newly commissioned Minecraft worlds created by Hong Kong artists Enoch Cheng and Lau Wai.

Tapping into Minecraft’s tremendous potential for contemporary art, 2³ or Not 2³ uses its gaming mechanism as an artistic platform. The artists materialise their reinterpretations of East Kowloon into digital environments, in which the viewers are invited to explore the immersive artworks created within the virtual realm of Minecraft.

Part of 2³ or Not 2³: East Kowloon is on Minecraft exhibition, Memories {Re}set – East Kowloon is a digital commission project for New Vision Arts Festival, Hong Kong. This Minecraft world is constructed based on five different filming locations in East Kowloon from Hong Kong and overseas movies, which include Running Out of Time (1999), Love In A Puff (2010), The Way We Dance (2013), Infernal Affairs II (2003), Blind Detective (2013), Time And Tide (2000), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), amongst others. Movie has always had the additional functionality of preserving the past and Minecraft is a virtual world in which you can build any scene based on reality. There is a certain degree of intercommunicationality between the two. They can both be an representation of reality but in different forms.
